about
The electro-acoustic group After the Rain was created in 2009 by Ignacio Agrimbau, Hossein Hadisi and Joe Kelly.
Darya is the first recording of original material by After the Rain since The Night Must Fall sessions in 2009-10. With Hadisi and Agrimbau currently working as a duo, After the Rain's new material maintains the group's distinct electro-acoustic sound, and fluid combination of composed and improvised materials.
Darya is the first of a series of pieces based on settings of longer texts. This marks a substantial change in the group's creative process, with structuring, mood and development of musical ideas informed by textual narratives and text-setting.
Darya tells the story of a child who swims into the sea and drowns. It is not clear whether the child aimed to swim across, or become part of the sea.
Darya is a name, but it also means 'sea' in Farsi. The Farsi name of the piece, غرق شدن دریا, translates as 'The Drowning of the Sea'. The English version uses 'Darya' and 'sea' separately for poetic effect, but also to create ambiguity across both texts. While Agrimbau's text was originally written in English, it was translated into Farsi, slightly modified in performance by Hadisi, and then translated back into English; the final version of the English text therefore reflects the combined performativity of text-setting and multiple translations.
Finally, linguistic ambituity enabled Hadisi to sing the piece thinking that the character was a boy, while Agrimbau conceived the character as a girl.

lyrics
Darya
This is the first time I sea the sea
How many fish are swimming in the sea?
(Darya)
How fast do fish swim?
Do they swim faster than me?
(Darya)
Do they swim together?
Would they swim with me?
(Love, love)
If we swim together, will we be faster than the grownups' boats?
(Water, water, water)
Swimming so fast...wouldn't the fish be better sailors?
Darya, love, water!
(tic-toc-tic-toc)
The sea is wavy, the sea is wavy
The sea is choppy, blood elevating
Blood elevating, blood is choppy
The sea is wavy, the sea is wavy
(tic-toc-tic-toc)
The sea elevating, the sea is wavy
The sea is choppy, blood elevating
Blood is choppy, the sea is wavy
Blood elevating, the sea is wavy
The sea elevating, the sea is wavy
(tic-toc-tic-toc)
The sea is wavy, the sea is wavy
Blood is choppy, the sea elevating
Waves of blood, the wave is choppy
The sea elevating, the sea is wavy
The sea is wavy, the sea is choppy
Blood elevating, blood is choppy
The sea is wavy, the sea is wavy
The sea is choppy, blood elevating
(tic-toc-tic-toc)
Darya! Darya!
Darya is stormy! Darya is deep!
Darya is fast! Darya is cold!
Darya! Darya!
Look at me
To my sunken skin you taught height
To my blind eyes you taught light
I am move
I am close
I am found
I am close
Look at me
